We recently spent a night at the gorgeous Penally Abbey Hotel
Mrs 50Plus LOVES Instagram! She really does. She’ll deny it every inch of the way though, but even after deliberately removing the app from her phone I still occasionally catch her having a browse on her laptop when she gets the chance. I’m much more sceptical of it all of course. All that ‘photoshopping’ and those engineered poses trying to impress or ‘influence’ the masses can sometimes really wind me up. Photos of trendy bathrooms with free-standing baths with showers over them, but wooden floorboards and no shower curtains. Come on! Pull the wool, why don’t you!
Real Life Version
Anyway, that aside, she came across a hotel on the hallowed Instagram one day and showed me the pictures. I agreed with her. It looked lovely. It was a very old building just west of Tenby that had been lovingly renovated and refurbished with oodles of character and charm. I agreed. I said it would be lovely to try it out sometime. And so we did.
Mrs 50 Plus has really suffered with pain issues for a long time and was a bit wary of doing anything that would aggravate her already miserable sciatica. But after trying a few options, we found that, strangely enough, our motorbike was proving to be one of the more comfortable ones for her. The weather was nice so we thought ‘why not’ and set off for a night of luxury and a change of scene.
The journey went well – no unexpected pain and suffering and great fun to boot! There’s something very special about the open road on two wheels. Much more exhilarating than an air conditioned car.
First Impression
We could tell from the moment we arrived that this was a lovely place. Beautiful views down over the golf links to the blue sea off Tenby and a beautifully manicured garden to relax in with a tea and cake.
We’d booked one of their smaller rooms but were upgraded to a beautiful larger room with a sea view on arrival. The bed was huge and comfy, there were a few chairs scattered round for taking in the views and great big floor to ceiling windows to frame it all.
Dinner was a real treat in the Rhosyn restaurant too. We both opted for the steak option and weren’t disappointed. The food was good, the service was great and the overall experience was truly memorable. After a super-comfy night’s sleep we took a late-ish breakfast and hit the road again.
Memories
Sometimes, these 1-day impromptu hotel stays can be as memorable as an annual foreign holiday and this proved to be one of those occasions. If it hadn’t been for Instagram we’d probably never have found it, but I’m glad we did and we’ll continue to sing its praises. She still hasn’t put the app back on her phone, but I’m happy for her to have a secret browse every now and then if it will result in another find like this.
