In our tyre buying guide, we’re going to give you some tips on what to look for when buying new tyres.
They’re getting a bit worn and it’s time to change a couple of tyres. There are different schools of thought on how it’s best done. Some prefer to just pop down to their local tyre dealer and take a couple of whatever’s on offer at the time. Others prefer to do a bit of ‘shopping around’ to find something that’s right for them.
Not Just ‘A Tyre’
Not many people know that they can actually tailor their tyres to the type of use they want. Each tyre nowadays is rated on three main criteria: Wet weather performance, road noise and economy.
For example if your preference is for a quiet ride, especially for those frequently driving longer distances, perhaps a low road-noise rating would be preferable to an extremely high wet-weather performance. Likewise, those who have a faster driving style on more challenging roads would find the wet weather rating of greater value. Economy is often at the forefront of our minds, but if the benefit in economy is at the cost of ride comfort, then a little sacrifice may be needed for some.
Trust Your Tyre Dealer
I know from my own experience, being a frequent long-distance driver (Cardiff to Aberdeen in a day) how important comfort and low noise is. The difference in the way you feel getting out of the car after a 550 mile trek is huge. Our own local tyre dealer is really helpful in that respect, having a good knowledge of what each tyre offers in terms of the above. He’s also very aware of how important the cost can be too. So we now place our trust in his ability to do most of the legwork for us when we need new tyres installed. But that’s just us! It’s worth travelling around a little and finding a dealer who you can talk to about what you really want from your tyres.
